This report is an historical account of the Kotuku District with discussion on oil prospects. Report and logs of Lake Brunner wells (S51/O4,O11) are supplied. The indications of petroleum at Kotuku are the most prolific in the Dominion, for a distance of over a mile there are numerous seepages in the alluvial beds, which constitutes the banks of Deep Creek and Petroleum Creek, and strong seepages also occur in a conglomerate formation on the banks of Red Creek. Also all of the shallow wells drilled at Kotuku yield small quantities of petroleum so that the indications could hardly be more favourable. Inflammable gas, salt and mineral water springs also abound. The quality of the oil is excellent considering the depth from which it comes.
