The Huinga-1 exploratory well was drilled to evaluate the hydrocarbon potential of the Tikorangi Formation and Tariki Sandstone reservoirs. Huinga-1 was spudded on 1 April 1999 and at 2459m encountered the top of the Murihiku basement overthrust. At 2939m drilling problems occurred. The lower part of the mud motor was lost downhole. This could not be fished out and it was therefore necessary to sidetrack the well. Huinga-1A was kicked off vertically at 1700m. At 2505.5m indurated siltstones and sandstone of the Murihiku Supergroup were found. On 26 May 1999 it was decided to suspend the well. A total depth of 3228m was reached. The well was plugged and suspended on 30 May 1999.
