Hoiho-1C was a rank wildcat and was drilled to test the hydrocarbon potential of a large structure, resulting from depositional drape and rejuvinated deep seated folds and faulting. No gas or oil shows were logged during the drilling of this well, and electric log analysis confirmed that all porous zones were water saturated. The Hoiho-1C can be considered a fair test for this structure on the south east flank of the Great South Basin. A fairly complete geological section down through the mid Cretaceous was tested. Although sands of much better than average porosities were found, and maturity capable of generating heavy oils and some gases had been reached, the lack of sufficient carbon content of the rocks can be considered the reason for this structure being barren of hydrocarbons.
