The 2003 Karewa gas discovery is the only hydrocarbon accumulation in PEP 38602, Taranaki, New Zealand. Karewa was initially recognised as an amplitude anomaly and was mapped and drilled on a relatively wide spaced 2D seismic acquired in 1995. A 12m gas sand was encountered by exploration well Karewa-1 in the early Pliocene Mangaa C1 sands. The undrilled 'Karewa north' prospect is located 7.5km north of Karewa-1, and is estimated at containing 32 BCF of gas.
