An assessment of the hydrocarbon potential of the Great South Basin in relation to the offshore Canterbury Basin.

The known results of the Sea Hunt Groups drilling in the Great South Basin are reviewed in relation to available published geophysical data. Four wells have been completed in deepwater offshore of the South Island and Stewart Island which have apparently demonstrated the presence of Cretaceous reservoirs, gas-prone coal measure source rocks and at least some potential for hydrocarbon generation. The oil potential of the basin is thought to be low. Published geophysical data enables the broad structural framework of the Great South Basin and the main sedimentary features of the Campbell Plateau to be outlined. Although data from the offshore Canterbury area is sparse, the general conclusion is that exploration activity further S has not significantly upgraded the remaining offshore Canterbury prospects and therefore no recommendation can be made for further work in the area.
