Puka-1 was designed to test the hydrocarbon potential of the Puka prospect; a four-way dip closure at the Mt Messenger level in the eastern margin of the Taranaki Basin in PEP 51153. Puka-1 was drilled over 12 days. During the drilling of the 6.25 inch hole, three sand packages were intersected in the Mt Messenger with good oil shows of up to 80% although with relatively poor total gas peaks of between 0.12 - 0.8 percent. Schlumberger Logging ran PEX-HRLA-GR-SP wireline logs over the 307 - 1550m interval and an initial evaluation determined that the well had intersected 8.08 m of high quality net pay. The well was subsequently cased, tested and placed on production.
