Tuhua-9 (PML38086) was drilled as a deviated development/appraisal well to provide further drainage of the McKee sands. Secondary objectives were the evaluation of the reservoir quality of the Mt Messenger, Taimana, Tikorangi, Matapo and Mangahewa Formations. The well penetrated the McKee Sands at 2331 m AHBKB. Top Mangahewa Formation was encountered at 2463 m AHBKB. The well took a kick from within the Mangahewa Formation at 2461 m AHBKB, causing the bit to become stuck. The string was backed off above the BHA, and logging was only possible down to 2416 m. No testing was performed. The well was completed as an oil producer from the McKee sands. Tuhua-9 spudded on 19 September 1994 and reached a TD of 2461 m AHBKB on 29 September 1994.
