The Manutahi Field is a small shallow onshore heavy-oil field located on the southern side of the Taranaki Peninsula, approximately 25km south of Hawera in PMP 38155. The 2011 Manutahi Horizontal Drilling Program was a pilot project designed to evaluate the commerciality of further development on the Manutahi Field. This project used horizontal wells to flood the primary reservoir with water pre-heated to a temperature of approximately 100C to lower the viscosity of the oil and boost production. One of these horizontal wells, Manutahi-D2H was spudded on the 12th March 2011 at 1930hrs. While drilling the 8.5 inch section, oil shows were noted at the boundary between the Matemateaonga Formation and Upper Matemateaonga Conglomerate, and in several thin sandstone beds toward the base of the Lower Matemateaonga Conglomerate. The 6 inch horizontal section was drilled from 1670m to a total depth of 2098m. Petrophysical analysis of the logs indicates between 254m and 299m of net pay was intersected in the 6 inch hole section. The rig was released from Manutahi-D2H at midnight on the 7th April and moved to a different location on the Manutahi-D pad to drill the Manutahi-D4H well.
