Tauteka-1 was drilled to test the hydrocarbon potential of a sequence of strata developed within the Rimutauteka thrust that has a seismic character similar to that of the McKee Field. The seismic sequence includes reflections which characterise the Tikorangi Formation, the Otaraoa Formation and the McKee Formation elsewhere in the thrust system. The sequence drilled comprised predominantly Miocene mudstone with rare thin limestone and sandstone stringers. Tauteka-1 did not penetrate an overthrust sequence as prognosed. The only sandstones encountered were those of the Mokau Formation, which Electric Logs showed to be water bearing.
