A gas producing well at Horotiu, near Hamilton, was visited on 5th June 1968 and a short reconnaissance of the area undertaken. A sample of the gas was obtained and analysed by the NZ D.S.I.R. This brief report records the data obtained from the visit in order that some appraisal of the licence area can be made. It is concluded that the presence of a substantial gas accumulation at Horotiu is most unlikely. Conditions suitable for structural accumulations are absent and the possibility of purely stratigraphic traps occurring in the types of deposits penetrated and at the recorded depths is remote. The origin of natural gas in the Hamilton lowlands is not known. It may have been generated from the large areas of marsh, or it is possible that it has a deeper origin.
