The West Taranaki area described in this report lies between two major gas condensate fields. It is an area where poor seismic quality deterred early explorers. With modern seismic techniques an improvement of seismic data has allowed the development of a more detailed understanding of the sub-surface geology. Within the Taranaki Basin, including the West Taranaki farm-out area, the Kapuni Formation is the exploration target. At both the Kapuni and Maui gas condensate fields the Kapuni Formation provides source, reservoir and cap-rock lithologies. Within the West Taranaki area one definite drilling target, the Opunake structure, has been defined. This structure is a fault-bound, plunging anticline. Mapping elsewhere in the area reveals a number of other structural features that could develop into additional targets.
