The first part of a gravity survey over the Murchison Block of Petroleum Licence area, is the subject of this report. This includes all which can be done with a car-borne gravity meter. The observations have been reduced to Bouger and residual Anomolies. This work confirms the presence of two faulted and folded sedimentary basins: the Maruia, of area 120 square miles and of probable thickness of sediments of 5000 feet; and the Murchison basin of 350 square miles, and probable thickness of 8000 feet. Gravity anomolies have rough coincidence with structure as mapped from surface geology. The Blackwater anticline is reflected in the gravity picture. A single magnetic traverse suggests that a ground magnetic survey would be of value in relation to interpretation of gravity anomolies.
