Cheal D-1 was drilled by Cheal Petroleum Ltd as an exploration well within PEP 54877, onshore Taranaki, New Zealand. The well was drilled from the first well slot on the Cheal D wellsite reaching a TD of 2397.35 MDRT on 27th July 2017. The well was drilled in a north westerly direction to evaluate the hydrocarbon potential of the Mt Messenger sand packages, equivalent to the MM3, MM2, MM1, and MM0 encountered in the Cheal B field to the south. The secondary objective of the well was the Urenui A and B Sands. The Urenui A sands were completed, however, testing concluded that gas quantity was not large enough to be deemed economic as a standalone doscovery. Following completion, the rig was released on the 5th August 2017.
