This interpretation shows that the Taranaki basin is probably well developed in Concession 687 with good N-S structures abundant in the western flank of the basin. However, correlation with surface geology shows that nonmagnetic Early Mesozoic and Late Paleozoic greywackes probably overlie the deep magnetic basement under Concession 688, Area 5. So, as far as the magnetic data are concerned, Concession 688 is only as prospective as the onshore area immediately N of the concession and E of Mt Egmont. Moreover, exploration on the land area to date serves to substantiate the conclusions reached from the aeromagnetic data with respect to Concession 688. The Tertiary may, however, thicken from the mainland southward into the concession; but this would have to be determined by other geophysical methods.
