Sidewinder-4 was drilled as an exploratory well designed to evaluate the hydrocarbon potential of an Upper Miocene Mt Messenger amplitude anomaly turbidite sand. Sidewinder-4 was drilled by Ensign Rig 19 and was spudded on April 11, 2011. It drilled to a total depth of 1999m MD and reached TD on April 27 2011. The well penetrated the Egmont Volcanics, Tangahoe, Matemateaonga, Urenui, Basal Urenui Sand, SW2 Sand, SW4 Sand and Intra Mount Messenger formations, with hydrocarbon shows in the SW2 and SW4 Sands. Quality of the shows was poor, with only minor gas and trace oil. The decision was made to plug the well and set a kick off plug to side-track the well and test another target. Sidewinder-4-ST1 began drilling April 30 2011.
