The Totangi-1 well was drilled by the NZ Petroleum Company Ltd during 1938-39, on a location about 18 miles NW of Gisborne. It reached a total depth of 5,700 ft before being abandoned. The Totangi-1 well spudded in just below the base of the Porticulasphaera glomerosa zone, probably in the Globigerinoides bispherica zone, and penetrated the base of the Sphaeroidinella disjuncta zone at 5,350 ft and then drilled into the Globigerinoides triloba zone to TD. Core samples from the thirteen Mangatoetoe Test Bores which were drilled by the NZ Petroleum Company in 1941 have been examined. Their ages range from Sphaeroidinella disjuncta to Porticulasphaera glomerosa zone. From the sub-surface information obtained it was possible to draw a structural contour map.
