Pohokura South-1A was a sidetrack of the Pohokura South-1 well. The objectives of the well were to reach and core the Turi Formation and the Mangahewa Formation sandstones, to evaluate the sands, confirming hydrocarbons and enable a longer-term production testing of the sands. Pohokura South-1A was spudded on the 28 September 2002 kicking off Pohokura South1A at 425 metres. The hole was drilled to 2003 metres, wireline logs were run. The hole was opened out to 1484 metres. At this depth the pony drill collar together with the bullnose below the hole twisted off. Fishing attempts were unsuccessful. Pohokura South-1B was kick off from 1436m. Pohokura South-1B reached total depth of 5032 metres on 5 January 2003.
