Mako-1 was designed as a vertical exploration/appraisal well to twin the Miocene section drilled in Ahuroa-2. The targets were three zones of the Mt Messenger Sandstone, not tested in Ahuroa-2 due to the success of the deeper Tariki Sandstone. Sandstone units were encountered as predicted, however reservoir proerties are not as good as expected. One zone of the Urenui and 2 zones of the Mt Messenger were tested, with only the 1534-1542 m zone of the Mt Messenger considered worth completing to test oil production rates. While not as succesful as expected, the well is in a key position on the Tarata Thrust, and a more detailed evaluation programmes should be conducted. Mako-1 spudded on 11 November 1995 and reached a TD of 1600 m AHBKB on 20 Nov 1995.
