A vertical seismic profile was recorded on February 15 and February 21, 1989 with the three component seismic acquisition tool in the Kupe South #4 well (PPL38116). The data was initially processed using only the vertical component of the conventional zero offset vertical incidence processing chain. The data revealed significant dipping structure. The vertical ray path assumption inherent in the conventional processing chain breaks down in the presence of a steeply dipping structure. With simple modelling it is trivial to demonstrate that steeply dipping events will afford significant subsurface coverage. Forward modelling techniques were used to correctly image the seismic reflectors and distinguish the reflected compressional events from mode converted reflected shear.
