The Tariki North well (PPL38034) was planned to test the hydrocarbon potential of the northern part of the Tariki thrust block. Tariki North-1, spudded on 9 May 1987, drilled an in-situ sequence east of the main thrust fault. The structure was reappraised and Tariki North-1A, sidetracked to the west, intersected the overthrust block at 2714m AHBKB and encountered the top Tariki Sandstone member at 2899m AHBKB. The Tariki Sandstone member was found to have reasonable reservoir characteristics. Hydrocarbon fluorescence and high gas values were recorded. Subsequent core and wireline log analysis showed the reservoir interval to have a high water saturation. The well was plugged and abandoned on 29 June 1987.
