This report deals with the area extending from Gisborne to Wairoa, and from the coast westward to the Wairoa River, and is covered by the Patutahi, Nuhaka and Opoiti Survey Districts. The stratigraphic section of the area contains over 20,000 ft of Tertiary marine sediments that range in age from Pliocene to Eocene, of which 13,000 ft are essentially mudstones and silts and 7000 ft are sandstones. Two well defined structures occur. The Mangaone-Waingake structure is a faulted anticline, 20 miles long with a gentle west flank 16 miles wide and a faulted east flank 3 miles wide. The dome where the well was drilled has a closure of at least 1200 ft. The Morere Anticline is a moderate fold 13 miles long and has a west flank from 3 to 4 miles wide. It is recommended that, in view of data presented, no further drilling be undertaken either on the Mangaone-Waingake structure or the Morere Anticline.
