The purpose of this report is two-fold; first, it fulfils a part of the requirements made by the agreement with the Taranaki Oil Company; second, it presents the result of the field work on a structure which is typical for the Gisborne area, and which is also unique in as much as it shows both the Cretaceous core and its Tertiary cover well-exposed. The presence of seepages at Waitangi has induced large interest in this area. However, this interest is not justified. The seepages are important in as much as they show that the Gisborne Basin as a whole contains oil-bearing sediments, but they do not lend any special significance to this particular locality. Potential source rocks are present, sand conditions are fair, but structural conditions, both regional and local, are not satisfactory.
