Rere-1 was spudded on 28 August 1985 and drilled to a final depth of 4351.5m AHBKB in 213 days. The well was plugged and abandoned as a dry hole on 4th of April 1986. The expected reservoirs above and below the pre-Haumurian unconformity were not encountered. An extended section of the Cretaceous Karekare Formation projected the top of the Koranga Formation, the primary target, 500m deeper than prognosed. The lack of reservoir sandstone in the drilled section, the increased depth of burial and its adverse affect on reservoir quality, together with the slow drilling progress, led to the decision to plug and abandon the well approximately 500m short of the predicted level of the target reservoir.
