Kumara-2 (PPL 38070) was drilled as an exploration well to evaluate the Kumara Structure previously drilled by SFL-1 (Kumara-1). The top of the Brunner, which was the primary target, was drilled deeper than prognosed with the original misinterpretation attributed to the poor quality of seismic. Cores from Brunner and Paparoa coal measures show poor to moderate oil shows within sandstones; core analysis demonstrate poor reservoir properties. At 1756m the drill string became stuck and Kumara-2A was kicked-off at 1523m and redrilled the section to a total depth of 1771m. Formation depths in the sidetrack were identical to the original well showing that the well paths were close. Similar sandstone quality is found in Kumara-2 and -2A. Following testing the well was plugged and abandoned.
