The Clipper-1 well (PPL 38202) was spudded on 27 March 1984 and drilling was completed on 11 June 1984. The objective of drilling the Clipper-1 well was to evaluate the hydrocarbon bearing potential of Late Cretaceous Coal Measure sandstones at circa 4450 m, and drill on to define Basement formation top. The well fulfilled its objectives in that the Late Cretaceous Coal Measure sandstones below 4205 m were drilled and evaluated by means of wireline logs and RFTs, and top of Basement formation was defined as 4684.5m brt. All formation tops came in earlier than predicted in the original forecast. Due to the small amount of hydrocarbon bearing sands encountered and their low permeabilities, it was decided that evaluation by drill stem testing would not yield sufficient further information to be economical, and was therefore not carried out. The well was plugged and abandoned with gas condensate shows. The full report comprises the following parts: Drilling completion report; Geological completion report; Drilling Proposal; Application for consent to drill - Parts I & II; Routine core analysis; Petrology of samples from the Upper Cretaceous Clipper Formation; Maturity and source potential of Clipper-1; Report on the Canterbury Bight survey, Nov/Dec 1982; Drilling Programme; Report on the site survey and rig positioning exercise at Clipper-1; Clipper-1 synthetic seismogram; Sonic calibration report; Bottom Survey report. Pages 513-514 are revised copies of pages 172 and 184 respectively (NZGS numbering).
