Geological Report on the Westland Area.

This report is a description of two main areas on the West Coast of the South Island, (a) the northern, on the E bank of the Grey River from Ikamatua to Ngahere and extending about six miles eastwards, and (b), the southern, stretching from Greymouth to Ross and about eight miles in width. With the exception of the Kotuku seepages on the northern shore of Lake Brunner and the petroliferous odour of the Fireball creek limestones, oil and gas indications in Westland are absent. From the meagre evidence obtained, it is surmised that the mother formation is some horizon in the Kaiata Mudstone and some of the sand horizons of the Middle Omotumotu as seen in Bray creek should provide suitable reservoirs.
