Report

The Owen River, Buller District, Southwest Nelson : An environmental statement

Login to download

This report aims to review a proposed mining operation on the Owen River channel and the environmental objections raised by local farmers, the Nelson Acclimatisation Society and the Westland Catchment Board. Potential environmental damage through accelerated bank erosion, excessive turbidity, restrictions to salmonid access, or increase in river bed elevation would all be countered by careful planning and control of the proposed operation. Excavation of spawning gravels is claimed to be both irreparable and of long-lasting consequence although counter claims to the contrary have also been voiced. More information is required.
