Ironsands Offshore Mining (IOM) Ltd commissioned Consultancy Services Ltd to provide a report on the suitability of available coring devices. The review concluded a Sonic RC Drill System would be the most cost effective approach to sampling in the region. In order to identify specific targets worthy of drilling a marine induced polarisation survey (MIPS) was determined to be the most most favourable geophysical tool available. Due to the grounding of the vessel Rena the effectiveness of the MIPS survey was unable to be trialled. Following this revelation IOM made the decision to suspend operations in the permit until such times as the method can be proved effective for this style of deposit.
