A significant part of Northland is being assessed to determine the possibility of establishing a National Park centered on the remaining areas of kauri forest. The Northland region contains both mineral and energy resources which are summarised in this report. The identification of areas containing mineral or energy resources within the boundaries of the proposed park allow for its scenic, environmental and scientific values to be balanced against the potential for resource based economic developments. Mining in Northland is dominated by the extraction of large quantities of non-metallic minerals, particularly aggregates for roading and construction, limestone for agriculture, and china clays for industrial uses.
