The prospect area of EP 40096 comprises Plio-Pleistocene sediments deposited in a shallow marine and river delta environment. The area contains gold and other heavy metals. Basement rock comprises fine-grained gabbros of the Longwood Complex. Gold was discovered at Round Hill in 1868 and an estimated 200 000 oz of gold and 1 500 oz of platinum have been recovered to date. Exploration work during 1996 and 1997 included a full review of earlier work, identification of channel-like features on seismic profiles to the east of the main channel. Joint venture and royalty negotiations comprised much of the activity for the year.
