This report describes a programme of stream sediment sampling, geological reconnaissance and petrographic work completed in the West Dome area, Southland. The most interesting rocks encountered are tholeiitic intrusive types: they are rich in hornblende and magnetite and appear to represent part of an Alaskan-Ural-type intrusion. Sieved samples collected nearby are anomalous in cobalt, chromium, iron and nickel and heavy-mineral concentrates are enriched in platinum, palladium and gold. The potential for Kachkanar-type platinum-palladium-gold-copper mineralisation in the area immediately north of West Dome is considered good. Follow-up sampling and geological mapping are recommended.
