This report deals with the 17 deep holes put down by the State for exploration purposes, and with 4 deep holes put down earlier by Kaitangata Coal company. Additional information on the geology of the area can be obtained from the report on the Coal Reserves in the Freehold land and Leases of the Kaitangata Coal Company, written by H.J. Harington in September, 1951. The drilling were carried out in three blocks beyond old workings of the Castle Hill and Kaitangata mines. They may be called Summer Hill, Coast, and Castle Hill blocks, and each are described separately.
