Geology of Kiwi Collieries Ltd : Ten Mile valley

Login to download

The Kiwi is located in a southerly plunging syncline, the beds dipping at approximately 1:2 to 1:3. The workings are bound to the east & west by NNE treding faults. Four seams have been worked, D and E in Upper Rewanui sediments and C and B in middle Rewanui sediments. Upper and Middle Rewanui sediments are separated for convenience by the first appearance od interbedded conglomerates. Correlation of D & E seams with Strongman State Mine coal measures causes no problems but Kiwi C Seam & Strongman C Seam are probably not equivalent. Kiwi C Seam is probably stratigraphically lower (Middle Rewanui) than the Strongman Seam (Upper Rewanui). This along with the enviroment of deposition of Upper and Middle Rewanui coal seam is discussed in detail.
