Geological assessment of the Heaphy Coalfield in north-west Nelson. Tertiary marine mudstones and limestones overlie coal measures and are confined to a major syncline marked by the river valley. As coal seams are sub-bituminous and no more than 4ft. thick, the area has no immediate economic importance.
