The Waikare Coalfield was explored in detail up to the mid-1980s as part of the New Zealand Coal Resources Survey. A database of drilling information resulted from this work. In 1996 Ian Brown and Associates were engaged to compile a new database for the Coalfield by coding all known geological logs. Early in 2004, Solid Energy New Zealand Ltd located a number of previously forgotten drill holes, which were added to the overall database for Waikare. Solid Energy NZ Ltd then engaged GeoConsult to create a 3D Vulcan resource model of the Coalfield.
