Greymouth Coal Limited has been investigating the Rapahoe Sector of the Greymouth Coalfield with a view to opening a new mine to supply high quality steaming coal to export markets. 17 holes drilled in 1987 were used to create a detailed geological interpretation, the further drilling of 7 drillholes in the early 1990s necessitated a reinterpretation of the geological model. The additional drilling confirms that a thick main seam coal resource is present. The recognition of a major reverse fault has significantly changed the structural setting of an area which includes a part proposed as the potential pit bottom of a new mine. The additional drilling has created many structural uncertainties.
