This is a more detailed report on the Pike River coalfield environment following on from the earlier report (CR2913). The wildlife of the upper catchment is depauparate as compared to similar altitudes in the nearby Saxton Ecological Area, and to the Paparoa National Park. The lower reaches have been heavily logged as far as the confluence with the Saxton Creek.
