Drilling for coal In Eastern Southland

Eastern Southland Lignite Fields covers some 3000sguare km. A number of widely-spaced exploratory lines of holes were drilled. Further filtering was then carried out through the drilling of fill-in holes on blocks with highest potential rating, and subsequent grid drilling on 700-750m centres utilising open hole drilling - geophysical logging techniques. The programme entailed the completion of 466 holes about 175m deep over a 21 month period. It effectively located and defined six important lignite blocks to an indicated status.
