Some 540 ft (plus) of lignites, quartz conglomerates and fine quartoze fossiliferous sandstones are exposed in the Fraser Stream Fossil Creek area. Four coal horizons have been recognised, in upward succession named Penman, Benhar-main, Redfoot, and Mt Wallace. The northern boundary of the coal formation area for the two upper coal horizons can be inferred in the area. Benhar main coal horizon can be traced around the nose of Lake Tuakitoto Syncline from Lovells Hill to Elliot Hill on the western margin of the area. The coal reserves in the area mapped are estimated to be around 24,085,000.
