Report describes the Phase 1 Exploration activity undertaken jointly within CPLs 35215 and 35256, during the last quarter of 1984. The prospective coal baering formation is the Upper Creataceous to Lower Tertiary Pakawau Group. The major part of the work comprised reconnaissance mapping although literature studies and coal seam sampling and analysis were also undertaken. The mapping was directed towards sedimentological interpretation of the Pkawau Group from which an area was targeted as showing the best potential for economic coal development. However, the sedimentology and analytical data indicates that there is a low probability of locating a resource of sufficient magnitude and grade to justify the capital required to develop a mine in the area.
