A reconnaissance drilling programme in the Kaitangata coalfield was completed during late 1982 to mid 1983. It comprised 27 boreholes totalling 695m coring and 4712m open hole. All drill holes were geophysically logged and core from 5 cored holes was sampled for ash calibration purposes. This 1982/83 programme followed an earlier phase of reconnaissance exploration completed during summer 1981/82 (Barry 1982). A total of 2 holes amounting to 355m of coring and 3728m open holing were drilled. A seismic refraction programme was carried out during 1982-83 summer to help elucidate the structure.
