A preliminary mining assessment for the Mataura lignite deposit in the Southland region of the South Island was conducted in the period from October 1981 to March 1982 for THE lftb in Wellington, NZ. Based on results of previous exploration in the Mataura coalfield as well as our own interpretation and evaluation of the available data base geological reserves of lignite in the good indicated catergory were calculated to total about 1945 million tonnes (100%). This reserve is located in an area covering approximately 81km2. At a waste: coal ratio of 6.172:1- equivalent to 12,003 cubic metres of waste (overburden and innerburden material) to be removed to be removed - this lignite reserve represents the mineable part of Mataura coalfield.
