LFTB Report 1041: Describes an investigation to provide data for a preliminary assessment of geotechnical factors likely to affect mining of the Waimumu lignite deposit. Core recovered from three drillholes was logged and sampled for laboratory testing. A range of classification, strength and durability tests have been undertaken to provide data for preliminary assessment of cut slope stability and subsequent mining feasibility studies. The deposit lies in the Hedgehope Stream valley beneath undulating farmlands approx. 16 km southwest of Gore. The greywacke basement is overlain by Tertiary age Chatton marine beds, lignite and non-marine sediments of the Gore Lignite Measures.
