The lignite deposits of the South Island represent an important potential resource for producing liquid fuels. So far nine large-scale lignite deposits have been defined within the lignite measures of the South Island. The assessment was to evaluate the mineability of these deposits, i.e. the mining costs and their sensitivity to annual production levels and resource recovery rates. The results should be of value as a means fo comparing the deposits and form the basis for ranking them.
