L&M Coal Seam Gas Ltd drilled the Pokeno-1 exploration well in the North Waikato Coal Region, within PEP 38611. Pokeno-1 is a CSG exploration well located in the Pukekawa Coalfield and was designed to test for the presence of the Waikato Coal Measures and assess the CSG potential. The well was re-entered and finally abandoned in March 2007. The well was wash drilled from surface to 767.4m and cored to total depth at 824.4m within the Waikato Coal Measures. Pokeno-1 experienced severe drilling problems that arose after drilling equipment failed and an inappropriate mud system was used. As a result, the well had to be plugged and abandoned before coal was intersected.
